Choosing a Cremation Urn for a Shelf or Columbarium Niche

Choosing a Cremation Urn for a Shelf or Columbarium Niche

Choosing where to place a memorial urn involves two different measurements: the capacity inside the urn and the space available around it. Both matter when choosing an urn for a shelf, a cabinet or a columbarium niche.

Start with the amount of ashes you plan to keep, then check the full external dimensions of the selected design. A photograph of an urn cannot reliably show whether it will fit your space.

Choose the capacity before the display space

If you want to keep the complete amount of ashes, ask your funeral home or crematory to help confirm the required capacity. If you are keeping a small portion, a keepsake may be appropriate. A smaller display space is not a reason to select an urn that cannot hold the intended amount.

For comparison, the large bronze teardrop urn is listed at approximately 220 cu in. The medium bronze teardrop urn holds approximately 156 cu in, while the white mini teardrop keepsake holds approximately 3 cu in. Read our keepsake guide if you are deciding between a small remembrance and a larger urn.

Measure a shelf or cabinet

  1. Height: measure from the shelf to any shelf or surface above it.
  2. Width: check the clear space available beside other objects.
  3. Depth: measure from the front edge to the back, allowing for doors or other obstructions.
  4. Access: make sure the urn can pass through the opening and be placed inside without tilting or forcing it.

Allow practical space to move and position the urn rather than planning for an exact, tight fit. Choose a stable surface where the urn is supported fully, away from an edge or a place where it could easily be knocked.

Consider how you want the memorial to look. You may prefer the urn alone, beside a photograph, or with a few meaningful objects. Leave enough room for the arrangement to feel comfortable and accessible.

The large bronze teardrop design is listed at 12 inches high by 9 inches wide. Confirm depth and the full space needed before choosing a restricted location.

Ask the cemetery about a columbarium niche

A columbarium niche is a compartment used to hold an urn. The available space and permitted urns depend on the facility. Ask the cemetery or crematorium for its requirements before ordering or adding personalization.

  • What are the usable internal height, width and depth?
  • Is the opening smaller than the space inside?
  • Are there restrictions on materials, shape or the number of urns?
  • Are additional containers, documentation or placement arrangements needed?
  • Can staff confirm that the exact urn you are considering is suitable?

Send the facility the product specifications and obtain any missing measurements from us. A statement that an urn can be used in a suitably sized niche does not guarantee acceptance by every cemetery.

Compare the full product measurements

The large bronze teardrop listing shows 12 inches high by 9 inches wide; the medium bronze listing shows 10.5 inches high by 8 inches wide. The white miniature keepsake measures 3.5 inches high by 2.25 inches wide.

These height-and-width figures do not provide every measurement needed for an enclosed space. If depth, the base footprint or another detail is missing, contact Graceful Urns before ordering. Do not calculate internal capacity by multiplying the urn's exterior measurements.

Your checklist before ordering

  • Confirm the amount of ashes and the capacity needed.
  • Measure the location and its opening in three dimensions.
  • Check any facility requirements for the exact design.
  • Confirm missing measurements before adding personalization.
  • Review delivery information if you are arranging a placement date.

When you are ready, compare large adult urns, medium urns or keepsake urns by their individual specifications.
